A meal with and for the indigenous community to prevent suicide
- Lawrence restaurant (map)
Following a spate of suicides in the indigenous community of Attawapiskat, WeDoSomething Mtl decided to do something, so we searched for and found the only indigenous-run conference to fight suicide, Dialogue for Life. On May 30th, sixty WeDoSomething-ers gathered at Lawrence restaurant to connect with one another, and to learn.
Indigenous musicians Beatrice Deer and Odaya played for us, the team behind Lawrence feasted us and together we raised $7,188.52, with the support of the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Canada, Mr. Geoffrey Kelley. That money was used to pay for the travel, registration and accommodations for a group of fifteen youth who lost their friend to suicide 3 days before the Dialogue for Life conference, so that they could attend and learn healing traditions.
Thank you to Poissonnerie La Mer for donating the incredible seafood, and thank you to all those who donated hands and help, and to our sponsors who donated the items that raised $1,720 in raffle tickets: Nunamar, L'Oréal Canada, Vanessa Yanow Art & Design, Moksha Yoga Montreal. And a HUGE thank you to George Mavitzis for the incredible photos.
